I've been fervoushly reading your blog since I found it earlier today and I've really gotten a real laugh out of your posts. This one I find really interesting. First because my co-habitator and I are both highly intelligent ADHDers (plus I'm on the spectrum) with some real abandonment issues, and our fights are brutal. I've always secretly wished somewhere that our communication barriers were as undeniable as those of different mother tongues.

Also- as an aside, 3 years ago a Russian friend of mine told me a story that I've been weirdly obsessed with since- his father was Russian, his mother French. They met, fell in love, got married, had a child and by all accounts were just the most radiant jealousy-inducing pair. Until they began to try to really learn each others languages. Once they could "speak" more coherently, the more they fought and eventually divorced. I love the way you summed up that story for me without knowing with your own experiences- thanks for sharing!

ah, dear 'wife of russian', thank you for offering laughter and solace on this topic. american wife + east african husband = many of the issues you hint at above. as kristin comments below, there is peace to be found in knowing it IS more complicated, in many ways, to enter into a bi-cultural marriage. i've seen a few social groups opening up for bi-cultural couples and families, and welcome this trend. cheers for now!

I tried it both at room temperature and fresh out of the freezer. I tried it neat and in martinis.
I don't like the smell nor the taste.
I personally would stay away from it.
It has all the qualities of a cheap spirit - smells of rubbing alcohol and gave me a major headache. Label does not state distillation process or number. Although cheap, will definitely not buy again. For a few $ more you could buy a quality 3x or more distilled vodka.

Not true, my friend. If russian men is offering you to drink with him and you say "no" he's telling you what you said. If you refuse again, depending on situation you may get a punch in the face.

there is an american expression similar i believe. I would interpret it as Stop being a girl and lets go. Or is the actual way ive heard it said, sorry about the crudeness... "take out your tampon and lets go".. obviously said to a man. Or im an idiot. Either way.

Oh my goodness, I know I am late to the game, but this was wonderful! I have finally found a blog that is hilarious, and I can read it aloud to my husband when he gives me the look because I'm cackling like a mad woman, and he actually laughs along with me instead of just thinking I'm nuts! He is an American, but has been learning Russian and becoming quite fluent. I think we will enjoy your adventures with The Russian!

I dated and lived with a Russian from St.Petersburg for 10 years and I am Swedish, so we had some similarities culturally . Looking at the list, it's pretty spot on, however, your Russian forgot to mention the proper way to actually drink the vodka so that you do not do the whole shudder shake thing after swallowing.
The key is in the breath. Blow out of your mouth, then swallow, breathe in your nose and exhale out of your mouth. Then a little bite of lemon. This will be much smoother and you will find that when you get up from the table after drinking with the Russians you might actually still be able to stand.
If you drink it the wrong way, you will be on the floor. :(

My Russian is almost completely grey-haired at a fairly young age as well. Coincidence? Or camouflage during cold Siberian winters?
